Terms of reference: The Committee wants to promote Applied Mathematics as a whole through and within EMS. It wants to cooperate with other, sometimes more specialized, societies on the European and global level and with applications-oriented member societies, especially in further improving the public and political awareness about the importance of mathematics to cultural, economic and social development.

Terms of reference:
1. EMS-CDC should assist DCs wherever and whenever possible. [For practical reasons, CDC’s main activities during the next few years will probably focus on African and Asian DCs.]
2. EMS-CDC will assist DCs at the following levels:
i) Mathematics curriculum development for schools and for universities.
ii) Cooperation with local staff in conducting M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs; holding special courses in various areas of mathematics in which there is no local expertise.
iii) Helping to build up libraries through donations from colleagues in developed countries; mobilise funds to buy books for postgraduate studies and research purposes; supply mathematical literature upon request by institutions and/or individual researchers in DCs; negotiate with publishers on special book rates for DCs.
iv) Helping to build up regional centres and networks of excellence: these are centres directly or semi-attached to universities, and which provide expertise in areas and on levels in which regional universities are in need.
v) Provide information about where students from DCs (who already have an M.Sc.) can do their Ph.D., and what possibilities for Ph.D. grants exist. At the same time, in order to avoid a brain drain, as much as possible, CDC will support efforts to build up Ph.D. programmes in DCs according to international standards (regional centres of excellence could serve this purpose).
vi) Mobilise funds for junior and senior researchers to attend conferences in developed countries, and also help (both on an academic and financial level) organising conferences in DCs.

European Research Centres of Mathematics (ERCOM):

The remit of ERCOM:
  1. ERCOM is an EMS committee consisting of Scientific Directors of European Research Centres in the Mathematical sciences, or their chosen representatives. Only European centres, predominantly research oriented, with a large international visiting programme and covering a broad area of the Mathematical Sciences are eligible for representation in ERCOM. The eligibility of centres is decided by the EMS Executive Committee after consultations with ERCOM.
  2. ERCOM aims to contribute to the unity of Mathematics, from fundamentals to applications.
  3. The purposes of ERCOM are:
    • to constitute a forum for communications and exchange of information between the centres themselves and EMS
    • to foster collaboration and coordination between the centres themselves and EMS
    • to foster advanced research training on a European level
    • to advise the Executive Committee of the EMS on matters relating to activities of the centres
    • to contribute to the visibility of the EMS
    • to cultivate contacts with similar research centres within and outside Europe
  4. The Chair of ERCOM is proposed by the committee and appointed by the Executive Committee of EMS. A scientific Secretary is appointed by ERCOM. The terms of office of the Chair is four years, with the possibility of reappointment for another two year period.
  5. The Committee meets at least once annually.
  6. The research centres cover the expenses of ERCOM.

Terms of reference: This group aims at coordinating series of mathematical meetings, helping with organisation and (when possible) funding. The group regularly makes calls for proposals for such meetings, but can also initiate them in coordination with the Scientific Advisory Board of the Society. Types of meetings covered are : - Summer schools - Joint meetings with other societies - Joint "Mathematical week-ends" with corporate societies - EMS mathematical lectures Subjects cover all parts of mathematics, pure and applied.

Terms of reference: The aim of this group is to establish strong relations between the EMS and the European Institutions, in particular the D.G. Research of the European Commission. This interaction goes both ways : it allows the group to inform quickly the mathematical community of opportunities offered by the Commission's programmes, and it helps presenting to those who decide on the definition of these programmes the potential of mathematical research - pure and applied - in Europe.

Terms of reference: The Committee has the purpose to work as a fact-finding unit exposing the problems and supporting the recognition of achievements of women in mathematics. It is directed to take such actions as it deems appropriate to encourage more women to study mathematics at school level, at university level, and at research level; and to support women mathematicians in the academic profession. For example, this may involve the holding of special meetings, competitions, publicity, summer schools, and the organization of mentor rings directed to women interested in pursuing careers in mathematics, as well as actively supporting such activities initiated by other mathematical societies such as European Women in Mathematics and Association femmes et math, and closely liaising with them.
It is directed to work towards the goal of achieving a sound (arguably equal) balance between the numbers of men and women involved in mathematics at all levels, with mutual respect towards each other as mathematicians, and with equal career opportunities in mathematics.
